A new ADU bigger than the main house, heck yeah.
Awash in concrete, modern aesthetics, and hillside challenges - time to soften the place up. This new construction ADU had beautiful tiers of poured in place concrete and we were excited to tap into our Japanese heritage and bring a touch of Yawarageru.
The warms and cools of Pennsylvania bluestone brought some soft underfoot variations in tone. An introduction of some wabi sabi with the urbanite-timber-gravel-draping plants was also in order to balance the massive modernist structure. Tons of billowing texture and pollinating habitat to bring it all to life.
Final touch - granite boulder water feature with traditional Shishi-Odoshi.
An exercise in balance and warmth. Turned out cool.
