a pasadena craftsman
Historical integrity, ancient techniques, cool people.
We always jump at any opportunity to build a dry stack. And a beautifully intact Craftsman is just the place to put them.
These folks had this extraordinary home and a beautiful family and a side yard that was not really usable. The hillside was not crazy steep, but steep enough that it needed some sculpting to be usable. The goal was a magical English Countryside vibe with native and climate compatible plants. Dry stack is one of our specialties, is a primary masonry technique and happens to check all of our clients boxes in terms of vibe. So stack away we did. Yarrow, chamomile, Salvia Apiana, Mallows, oh my.
The patio of the home had some cool elements - lots of stone veneer planters and a built in kitchen BBQ area (that we rebuilt). And lots of concrete. The goal was to soften up all of this concrete and create gathering zones without excavating the whole shebang. So we built some lovely Ipe planter benches filled with textured, pollinating life. Sometimes it’s better to smash to smithereens and sometimes it’s better to just add something new.
